FYI

I'm trying to be better about writing at least a little blurb about each book I read. Trying being the operative word here. The blurb, if and when I do get around to writing it, will of course happen after the book has been finished. So, in the beginning, what may show up here is just the book's basic information, title, author, date I began reading it. But feel free to comment on the book even if I haven't yet written anything about it. I always like talking about books!

Curses

For him that stealeth, or borroweth and returneth not, this book from its owner, let it change into a serpent in his hand and rend him. Let him be struck with palsy, and all his members blasted. Let him languish in pain, crying aloud for mercy, and let there be no surcease to this agony till he sing in dissolution. Let bookworms gnaw his entrails…and when at last he goeth to his final punishment, let the flames of Hell consume him forever. --Curse for book thieves by Edmund Lester Pearson (1880-1937)

Scale

Loved the book. Will probably find ways to bring it up in conversations and insist that people read it.

Liked it well enough. Would probably say that it's a good read, except for [fill in the blank].

Liked it well enough to finish the book but I wouldn't recommend that someone else read it.

So bad I couldn't finish the book. If someone mentioned the book title to me I'd probably shake my head and tell him not to waste his time or money.

Reading is Fundamental

So many books, so little time

I think I’m a little burned out on the Foundation books. I’m only a few pages into this book and I couldn’t care less about the characters or the storyline. Five sci-fi books in a row is just a little too much fantasy for me I think. We’ll see. I’m going to give it a chance for a few more pages, but if I don’t get pulled into the story, I’m going to put the book aside. No sense in forcing things.  blank stare

Reading this for the book club. I haven’t started the book yet, but I’m very excited about the book club. Sometimes I don’t know which I like more: reading or talking about books. It’s such a sad thing to read a great book and have no one to discuss it with. I tried starting a book club several years ago but after a few months, even though people swore they loved to read, the thing just fell apart. That was a disappointment, but it was probably for the best. Most of the sessions tended to turn into bitch sessions about work so that was no fun.

I’m hoping that things will fare better with the online bookclub. It’s hard to imagine how things could be worse. smile

I couldn’t wait.

I started the book Sunday and I’ve already read more of this than Foundation and Empire. I knew this would happen. Ah well.

The 3rd book in the series. I found Foundation just a tad tedious. Mostly because the book is made up of four short stories and I don’t much care for reading short stories. Plus, I really enjoyed reading about Hari Seldon in Prelude to Foundation. In the next couple of books, he’s only referenced I think, briefly making appearances when a crisis comes up. I’m looking forward to getting to Forward the Foundation where the story comes back to Seldon. Before that happens, however, I need to work through this book, and three others, one of which I don’t have and can’t find in bookstores. Bother. Blah. I have a couple of weeks to find it so I guess I shouldn’t get all worked up about it.

I read the Foundation series when I was in junior high. I was going through my sci-fi phase at the time and I really got into the books. For a while now I’ve been wanting to reread the series but I was afraid that it wouldn’t be as good as I remembered. I hate when that happens. But I’m chancing it now. The desire to reread the books hit me sometime last year and watching I, Robot just strengthened it. Why, I don’t really know. I’m pretty sure there are no naked Will Smiths in the books.

Prelude to Foundation was written in 1988, after I went through my sci-fi phase, so I haven’t read it. I think this might turn out to be a good thing. We’ll see…
